Abayagiriya - Anuradhapura

Few years ago we went to Abayagiriya dagoba on our way to Anuradhapura which was a buddhist temple complex great Anuradhapura era. King Walagamba is credited with the construction of Abhayagiri dageba during the period of his second reogn, from 89-77 BC. It is one of the tallest buildings of ancient times. Present day height of this dageba is 245 feet. The relics of the Buddha are said to have been enshrined in a figure of a bull made out of thick gold. the name, according to the chronicles, is derived by combining ' abhaya' ( form the name of King Vattagamini abhaya) and 'Giri' ( name of Nighanta who lived in the jain monastery).
